For this assignment, you will need to answer one of the two questions in a few paragraphs. It is perfectly fine for you to comment on other classmates' postings, as my hope is this will stimulate discussion on the topics and get you to think deeper on these subjects.
Question 1
1. In an interesting sociological analysis, Jared Diamond, a botanist, brought forth his theories on how and why Eurasian societies were able to out last and conquer North and South American societies, stating that it was what he calls "geographic luck", a theory which he states disproves any notion of racial superiority. The title of his work is Guns, Germs, and Steel
Based on your reading and prior knowledge, evaluate the role of guns, germs and steel in the conflicts between the Spanish and Native Americans.
Question 2
2. As is discussed in your text, the Spanish kill countless numbers of Native Americans through disease and war. This notion that all of the major accomplishments of the Spanish in North ans South America were conquering and killing is known as the "Black Legend".
Discuss the validity of the notion of the Black Legend. Is it fair to say the Spanish did nothing but kill and conquer? Did they offer some positives to the Natives and the land of North and South America?
